Metheny Music Foundation scholarship winners

June 13, 2014

The Metheny Music Foundation of Lee’s Summit, recently presented its annual scholarships for 2014. Included were awards for summer music studies (a program now in its 8th year) and the Foundation’s second annual “Knight Award” – named in honor of the late William R. and Lorene Metheny Knight – that provides financial assistance for a Lee’s Summit student planning to attend college as a music major.

May 16, at Lee’s Summit City Hall, summer music camp scholarships were given to James Farquhar (cello), Kathryn Hilger (viola), Angela Holmes (cello), Quinn Mosier (bass), Tanner Qualls (multi-instrumentalist), and Lindsey Wendleton (alto saxophone). And on May 25, as part of the Lee’s Summit Symphony Orchestra’s concert at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Isaiah Carter (drums) and Angela Holmes (cello) were introduced as co-winners of this year’s Knight Award. Music director of the LSSO, Russell E. Berlin, is also a board member of the Metheny Music Foundation.

Lee’s Summit is the hometown of guitarist, 20-time Grammy winner, and Foundation board member Pat Metheny. Pat’s brother, trumpeter Mike Metheny is the Foundation’s chairman.

“Metheny Foundation scholarships are given to qualifying Lee’s Summit students in the fields of band, jazz, orchestra, vocal, and any other area of music where the student shows passion and potential,” Mike Metheny says. “Since 2007 we have awarded more than 35 of these scholarships and every year our board members have been inspired by the level of talent among the applicants.”
