Green thumbs gather this weekend for Gardenwalk

The Third Annual GardenWalk features a tour of a historic downtown neighborhood this weekend.

Dave Eames, volunteer coordinator of the event, said there are garden homes that will appeal to all tastes.

“If they like formal, we’ve got that, if they like funky, we’ve got that, we’ve got vegetable gardens,” Eames said.

People who don’t have tickets, $5 per person, can come to the first stop on the tour to get their passport that includes a map, Eames said. Advance tickets can be purchased at Lee’s Summit Great Southern Bank locations or at the first house on tour the day of the event.

The walking tour is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., June 14, starting at Sixth and Miller streets. Participants can follow a route planned for the tour in the Howard’s First Addition or make their own itinerary. The route is an easy stroll, and visitors can take time to talk with gardeners, photograph, sketch or paint the architecture or plantings.

There are a couple of new houses on the tour. Another new twist is expanded prizes for the garden scavenger hunt. People taking the tour will get a scavenger list of items to find in the gardens, and those completed will be put into a drawing for prizes. There will be one prize donated by each of the homeowners on the tour, Eames said.

There also will be refreshments, such as hot dogs or lemonade, for a donation.

Another new feature will be artist Tina Garrett at Sixth and Douglas streets, teaching a plein air (outdoor painting) workshop.
