A total of 24 students from Summit Lakes Middle School took a field trip to the Truman Library and Museum during late April.
The students qualified for the special event by reading eight or more of the 12 Truman Award nominee titles for 2013-14 and discussing each book with SLMS library media specialist Christie Brown.
The Truman Award is for Missouri sixth- through eighth-grader readers. Twelve nominee titles are selected by and voted on by Missouri students.
All of the 24 participating students from SLMS were eligible to vote for this year’s Truman nominee and several also served as reader-selectors last year. “Legend” by Marie Lu was the winning Truman Award title for 2014.
Students attending the field trip read an average of 3,077 pages each. Harry S. Truman, known for being an avid reader, was the only U.S. president who did not have a college education but was well-equipped for the presidency thanks to his reading habits.
