Kathy Hughey is the lucky winner of the Shop Lee’s Summit $1,000 prize. Hughey was awarded her $1,000 check on June 20 during the annual Parks and Recreation concert Rock the Green.
The Shop Lee’s Summit contest was created by the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the City of Lee’s Summit to educate and encourage residents to purchase goods and services in Lee’s Summit to improve the quality of the community. When residents Shop, Dine, Play in Lee’s Summit, the additional sales tax dollars goes towards improving the community and supporting its many needs.
To enter the contest residents had to fill out an official entry form and attach five original receipts from five separate businesses in Lee’s Summit (no minimum purchase necessary).
This was the third year for the contest, and the numbers continue to grow. The contest began May 1 and ended on May 31. The Chamber received 1,080 entries, totaling $164,842.63.
“My staff heard several times how excited residents were about the contest,” said Nancy Bruns, Chamber president. “However, more important than the excitement was the comments from individuals that said the contest made them really stop and think where they decided to spend their money. I think the real success of the campaign comes from the number of individuals we educated and changed habits on where they spend their dollars.”
When asked how she would spend the money, Kathy stated, “More shopping in Lee’s Summit – we’re working on our house, so I’ll be spending it in Lee’s Summit for decorating and building supplies.”
