SCA athletes to compete in AAU meet

July 9, 2014

State high jump champion Carlie Queen and two other athletes from Summit Christian Academy qualified for the Amateur Athletic Union National Junior Olympic Games.

Queen, who will be a sophomore at SCA next fall, qualified by taking first place in the girls 15-16 high jump and second in the pole vault in the AAU Area 16 national qualifier meet in Joplin. She won the high jump and took second in pole vault in her age group at last year’s AAU national meet and already has won 18 national championships.

Queen capped her freshman season at SCA last spring by winning the Class 2 state high jump title with a class-record 5-foot-7 ¾ mark. She also placed third in the pole vault.

Joining Queen at nationals will be SCA eighth-graders Lenetta Lee and Isaiah Vigliano. Lee, who qualified for nationals last year, placed first in both the girls 13 long jump and 200-meter dash and second in the 100 at the Area 16 meet.

Vigliano took third in the boys 14 200 and also qualified in the 400.

“We are very proud of these athletes and excited that they will be competing in the national Junior Olympics,” said SCA assistant track coach Christie Queen, who is Carlie’s mother. “We are looking forward to the coming season. The contribution of these athletes to both the junior high and varsity teams will certainly position SCA to be real contenders at state.”

The AAU National Junior Olympics will take place July 26- Aug. 2 in Des Moines, Iowa.
