Biking event comes to LS

July 23, 2014

Lee’s Summit will be July’s site for an event coordinated by BikeWalkKC where there are presentations, drinks and food and a casual bike ride.

That group’s monthly Handlebar Happy Hour is offering “Bike and BBQ” from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 24 at The Filling Station restaurant on Douglas Street downtown.

The aim is to draw new people to cycling, said Michael Park, Lee’s Summit’s traffic engineer.

The event starts with a casual nine-mile bicycle ride. Lee’s Summit’s Livable Streets Advisory Board helped attract the event and at 7 p.m. its members will discuss livable streets in Lee’s Summit, in particular the board’s activities. The events have resulted in new partnerships with local business and improved cycling accommodations, such as the business installing a bike rack to continue drawing cyclists, Park said.
