After two weeks of practice, it’s dress rehearsal time for Lee’s Summit North and Lee’s Summit West.
North and West will both take part in jamborees Aug. 15, one week before the opening night of the football season. The Broncos will play host to Center, Maryville and William Chrisman at 6:30 p.m. at the Broncos Activity Complex. The Titans will play the same night at Blue Springs.
North coach Ty Kohl said the jamboree is coming at just the right time for his team as he tries to replace 28 seniors from last season’s 2-8 squad.
“It’s a great measuring point for where and what we need work on,” Kohl said. “It’s an opportunity to evaluate kids to see who’s playing well and to see who is going to start on Aug. 22.”
Each team in North’s jamboree will run 28 plays against the other – 14 on offense, 14 on defense. The play will resemble real-game conditions as much possible, which Kohl said would benefit his inexperienced team.
“We have a lot of kids who have never played in a varsity football game before,” Kohl said. “This will be their first opportunity to play under the lights in the stadium, which will be a good experience for them.”
If nothing else, the Broncos will be happy to see different faces on the opposite side of the ball.
“We’re ready to play someone else,” Kohl said. “We’ve been banging our heads together for two weeks now. We had a couple scrimmages over the summer, but nothing with officials in a game-like situation.”
West, the Class 5 state champion last season, will go up against host Blue Springs, the Class 6 champion, in the jamboree at the Wildcats’ Peve Stadium. That jamboree begins at 7 p.m.
The Titans will be seeing more of Blue Springs this season. The Titans have been moved up to Class 6 and will compete in the same conference and district as the Wildcats. Liberty North and Raytown South will also be taking part.
Lee’s Summit won’t be taking part in a jamboree Friday. The Tigers have scheduled a scrimmage for 7 p.m. at Bud Hertzog Stadium.
