Lee’s Summit will see a little avant-garde this Friday night in downtown.
The Fourth Friday series sponsored by Lee’s Summit Downtown Main Street Inc. has offered art exhibitions and street plays. On Aug. 22 a new event is introduced: Lee’s Summit in Motion, a performance art piece where the public participates.
Organizer Michelle Diane Brown said Lee’s Summit in Motion would give people opportunity to explore the playful side they had when they were children.
“We get inhibited and shy away from all of that as we get older,” Brown said.
How the piece takes form is open-ended.
“It’s all dependent on if people come and if they’re willing to step out of their comfort zone ... if they’re curious and want to have some fun,” Brown said. “You don’t have to be a dancer of any sort, just be able to walk, stand up.”
Brown’s background includes being a professional dancer who founded a dance troupe that specialized in improvisation.
“I think it’s fantastic that we’re exposing the community to all kinds of art,” said Teresea Hogan Keene, a member of DLSMS Cultural Arts Committee and director of Got Art Gallery.
For Lee’s Summit in Motion, Brown will give assignments to volunteers for the performance, which runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at Main and Third Street, in the Equity Bank.
They’ll enter a circle of chairs, follow instructions on the card, or if a “challenge arises,” make creative adjustments as they see fit.
Sit in a black chair for 30 seconds, and then move that chair to a different place. Next stand back to back with someone for any length of time, then sit again and recite the ABCs. Exit the performance space, re-enter, repeat the first three steps and exit again.
Depending on participation and inspiration, the performance might move outside.
Also for the evening:
• Drink and Draw with a live model, 6-8 p.m. at LMS Wine Creators, 127 SE Third St.
• Cellular Cenes, two performances at 6 and 8 p.m. of the street play written by Ben Martin, president of Summit Theatre Group, at Got Art Gallery, 18 SW Third St. Tickets are $10; to purchase go to www.downtownls.org.
• The 318 at 318 SE Douglas St. will exhibit photos submitted for the Awkward Family Photo Contest
