August 26, 2014

Lee’s Summit will play for the championship of the Greater Kansas City Softball Tournament after winning its pool and advancing through the Gold Bracket in the season-opening tournament.

Lee’s Summit will play for the title at 5:45 p.m. tonight (Aug. 27) at Adair Park in Independence. The Tigers, who won the Class 4 state title last season, won their pool with 10-0 victories over St. Joseph Central and Odessa on Aug. 23. Tigers pitcher Lexi Crabtree had 13 strikeouts against Odessa.

Winners of the eight three-team pools advanced to the Gold Bracket. Second-place finishers went to the Silver Bracket and third-place teams to the Bronze Bracket.

In the Gold Bracket, Lee’s Summit beat Kearney 5-2 and reached the final with a 6-4 win over Blue Springs South in the semifinals on Aug. 25. The Tigers rallied from a 4-1 first-inning deficit against Blue Spring South with four runs in the second inning. Bailey Baird’s homer accounted for two of those runs.

Lee’s Summit West, which also advanced to the Gold Bracket, will play in the consolation final at 4 p.m. today. The Titans fell to Blue Springs South 6-3 in their first bracket game before bouncing back to beat Kearney 4-1.

Lee’s Summit North split its pool play games, losing to Liberty 4-1 and beating St. Teresa’s Academy 5-3. The Broncos played Grain Valley in the first round of the Silver Bracket.
