Tigers triumph over Park Hill South

Lee's Summit JournalAugust 29, 2014

Lee’s Summit’s volleyball team is turning things around. In a hurry.

The Tigers offered more evidence that this could be a special season Aug. 27 when they beat Park Hill South 21-25, 25-20, 25-19 at Lee’s Summit. After winning only seven matches last season, the Tigers are now off to a 2-0 start.

And the second win came against a Park Hill South team that went 35-3-1 last season and reached the finals of the Class 4 state tournament.

“A great comeback win against a solid team,” Lee’s Summit coach Julie Carver said. “Tonight was a true team effort.”

Carver said Lee’s Summit came out slow in the first game, with the offense ineffective because the Tigers’ passing was not very strong.

But they bounced back in the second game, and took advantage of Kate Ward’s hard serving in the final game to pull off the early-season surprise.

“I was really proud of the way the kids fought back and were resilient,” Carver said. “They stuck together, kept fighting and persevered.”

Hailey Criswell led Lee’s Summit with 11 kills and three blocks, while Emma Lock had eight kills to go along with 15 digs. Cass Sterrett had a team-high 16 digs and Amy Simonin had 12 digs.

BRONCOS ALSO 2-0: Lee’s Summit North improved to 2-0 after winning at Park Hill South 2-0 Aug. 26.

SUMMIT CHRISTIAN FALLS : Summit Christian Academy lost to Pleasant Hill 25-16, 25-17 in the Eagles’ season opener Aug. 26 on their home floor.
