Echoes

ColumnistJune 15, 2017

dad

awakens

mornings

uncertain

i can see it

in his eyes

hear it

in his voice

when we

visit

a little

before

he goes

to work

and i

to local

college

classes

or pause

again

to talk

late night

weary

at stairs edge

heading

to bed

company

employs him

has been

bought out

by large

national

chain

on the prowl

for younger

more tech

savvy nearer

entry level

people

three homes

on our street

sold recently

amidst

the supply

short

housing

surge

since

my birth

immediate

neighborhood

had been stable

he and mom

are church

shopping

lately

when they

even

consider

going

i grew

with them

attending

only one

although

time

for that

now

finds me

with close

friends

or outdoors

in a park

or helping

at a homeless

shelter

i think dad

may have had

an almost

not quite

just barely

whats it

called

affair

mom is

gone

a lot

works

long

has many

interests

i believe

they love

each other

are

committed

thats such

a good thing

in my life

when talk

turns to

politics

he simply

shakes

his head

i understand

better why

he follows

sports

because

teams wear

clearly

identifying

uniforms

and smiling

banter with

each other

on first base

i love

my dad

even that

can get

confusing

these

days
