It’s all about Stephen Sondheim this month at MCC-Longview’s Cultural Arts Center in Lee’s Summit.
Summit Theatre Group will be performing a musical and visual tribute to Sondheim in a revue called “Sondheim on Sondheim,” featuring some familiar and not-so-familiar works from one of the most well-known composers on Broadway. The show features songs from 19 of Sondheim’s shows.
Summit Theatre Group’s performance of “Sondheim on Sondheim” debuts at the MCC-Longview Cultural Arts Center Black Box Theatre this Friday and Saturday and continues June 23-25. The show is directed by Rick Bumgardner. Bumgardner is making his directing debut for Summit Theatre Group.
Around the Kansas City area, Bumgardner has directed such classics as “On Golden Pond,” “The Full Monty,” “Steel Magnolias” and “I Hate Hamlet.” In a press release, Bumgardner described a talented cast, coupled with the works of Sondheim, will make for a moving and memorable performance.
“Sondheim has always fascinated me, his ability to look at fundamental emotions and imbue those emotions with such richness and understanding that we can’t help but be moved when we see one of his shows and listen to those incredible lyrics which are chosen with a laser-like focus,” Bumgardner said. “The music is beautiful; but, it’s the telling of the story that I am so fascinated with.”
The eight-member cast features Eli Biesemeyer (Corder, Mo.), Abbey Downs (Blue Springs, Mo.), Chuck Duer (Kansas City), Amy Erbe (Lumberton, N.J.), Dudley Hogue (Eskridge, Kan.), Allison Jones (Kansas City), Julie McDaniel (Independence, Mo.) and Mark Murphy (Clarinda, Iowa).
“Sondheim on Sondheim” starts Friday at the MCC-Longview Cultural Arts Center Black Box Theatre, located at 500 S.W. Longview Road in Lee’s Summit. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. except for June 25, which is a 2:30 p.m. matinee.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors.
